1986 - 1996: Reaching out to
the Community and Buying Hillcrest
1986: 50 members bus to Washington D.C. for the Right-To-Life March. 1987: The council has its first contact with the Celebration Singers. This is a group of Mentally Handicapped singers sponsored by Macedonia Lutheran Church. The council, through Operation LAMB, provides funding for this group to the present. 1988: Father Wisenbaum, Council Chaplain, enlists the council to help Allied Churches Homeless Shelter and Good Shepherd Kitchen with both manpower and donations. The Conventual Franciscan Friars are assigned the pastoral ministry at Blessed Sacrament. Father Giles Van Wormer is named Pastor. Father Mensch from St. Martha Parish in Kentucky speaks at Blessed Sacrament on mission Sunday. Several members talk with Father after mass and learn of a need for used clothing. For the next ten years, the council conducts a Thanksgiving used clothing drive for the benefit of St. Martha. More than 35,000 pounds of clothing is collected. Selling ice cream at the Graham Arts Around the Square becomes a premanent fund raiser. 1989: The Council begins participating in the State Adopt-A-Highway program and votes to buy robes for the first degree team. Governor Martin and a group of mentally handicapped citizens honor the Knights of Columbus at the Burlington Athletic Stadium for their Operation LAMB Program. Also this year, the council begins sponsoring a pancake breakfast after the morning mass on Sunday several months of the year. 1990: The now defunct fertilizer sale is replaced with poinsettias. The first annual Octoberfest is jointly sponsored by the Homeschool Association and the Knights. 1991: Father James Plavcan, now Pastor, requests that one of the pancake breakfasts after the Sunday morning mass, be designated to welcome newcomers to the Parish. Members set up a carpool to provide transportation for council Chaplain Father Hilary in his ministry at St. Julia in Siler City. Members of the Fourth Degree petition Supreme to charter a new assembly in Burlington. The Msgr Francis K. O'Brien assembly is chartered in October. 1992: The council, along with other parish organizations, agrees to provide the evening meal at the homeless shelter the first Monday of each month, with the council month set for August. The sale of poinsettias is ended and the council participates in the annual state raffle. 1993: At the request of Father James Plavcan, Pastor, the council assists with the refinishing of the Church floor. The council agrees to aid the parish CYO raise funds so that all members may attend the World Youth Day in Denver. Several council members also serve as chaperons. The council hosts the state free throw contest and has done so five times since. A member of the council and PSD, Joseph Dick, receives the Golden Knight of the Year award at the State Convention. 1994: Father Juniper Alwell is appointed the new Pastor. The council hosts its first State Third Degree at the Koury Center. 1995: A portable alter, and alter clothes, are provided to Father Michael Lorentsen, council Chaplain, for his use with the campus ministry at Elon College. The parish buys the old Hillcrest School, and the council provides flags and holders for each classroom. 1996: The council now exceeds 100 members. New social activities have begun, such as the annual family Christmas party, and valentine dinner. Highlights by Year 1954 - 1964: Activities and the struggle to maintain membership 1970 - 1974: A new Council, a New Church, and a Tootsie Roll Drive 1975 - 1985: Activities expand through three Pastors 1986 - 1996: Expanding activities to the Community and the Purchase of Hillcrest School 1997 - Today: Council grows to 100 members and looks to the future |
