1970 - 1974: A New Council, A New Church, and a New Tootsie
Roll Drive
1970:
In December
of 1970, the council was reactivated through the efforts of
Brother Sal Festa and some former members.
1971:
The New
Church is dedicated by Bishop Waters. The council organized an
activity to recognize Altar Servers. They conduct a "Morality
in the Media" petition drive at the local mall to stop the
mailing of pornographic material to homes. In addition to the
Knight of the Year Award, the Council institutes the Knight of
the Month program.
1972:
The council
provides a new outdoor flag pole and flag to the grade school.
They also set the second Tuesday of the month as the regular
meeting night.
1973:
Father
Bumann is named Pastor and Father Joe Vetter, a graduate of
Blessed Sacrament School, says his first Mass at the New
Church. The council undertakes to organize and sponsor a Boy
Scout Troop for the mentally handicapped at the Local Ralph
Scott Home. Brother Bill Sprague is the first Scout Master.
The troop remained in operation until the mid-1980's. The
council also becomes active in the Keep Christ in Christmas
program, with displays in local stores, passing out literature
and a roadside billboard.
1974:
The Tootsie
Roll Drive comes to Burlington. Until now, LAMB funds were
provided with fund raisers or from the general council fund.
The first drive grossed $1153. The council, over the next 28
years, has raised over $183,000 to aid the Mentally Handicapped
citizens of Alamance County. Brother Sal Festa is appointed one
of the first Eucharistic Ministers for the parish.
